Dahlonega Events & Festivals
Dahlonega’s calendar is packed year-round with festivals, wine events, live music, art fairs, and seasonal celebrations that draw visitors from across the Southeast. Here is your complete guide to what’s happening in the Gold Rush mountains.
Annual Festivals
Gold Rush Days
Dahlonega’s largest and most celebrated annual festival, Gold Rush Days transforms the Public Square and surrounding streets into a vast outdoor celebration every third full weekend of October. First held in 1954, the festival draws more than 200,000 visitors over two days, making it one of the most attended festivals in Georgia and one of the largest fall festivals in the Southeast.
The festival features over 300 juried arts and crafts vendors, six stages of continuous live music spanning bluegrass, country, folk, and Southern rock, gold panning demonstrations, a parade down the main street, cooking competitions, food vendors offering everything from smoked turkey legs to funnel cakes to local wine, and a carnival midway. The atmosphere is exuberant and genuinely festive — the kind of small-town celebration that feels increasingly rare.
Practical note: Gold Rush Days coincides with peak fall foliage season. Accommodations within 20 miles book out months in advance. Plan lodging early and consider arriving Thursday or Friday to enjoy the town before the weekend crowds peak on Saturday.
Date: Third full weekend in October (Saturday–Sunday)
Location: Dahlonega Public Square and surrounding streets · Admission: Free
Dahlonega Bluegrass Festival
One of the nation’s most respected traditional bluegrass events, the Dahlonega Bluegrass Festival has been bringing world-class bluegrass music to the North Georgia mountains since 1970. The festival is held at Blackburn Park and typically runs Thursday through Sunday over a long summer weekend, featuring nationally known acts alongside regional and local bluegrass talent.
The atmosphere is old-school and unpretentious — lawn chairs and blankets spread across the park, impromptu jam sessions forming among attendees in parking areas and campsites, children running freely, and generations of bluegrass fans sharing the communal experience of the music. Camping is available on the festival grounds for those wanting the full immersive experience.
The Dahlonega Bluegrass Festival is widely considered one of the last remaining “pickers’ festivals” — events where the informal music-making among attendees is as important as the main stage programming.
Date: Father’s Day weekend in June
Location: Blackburn Park, Dahlonega · Admission: Ticketed; camping available
Wildflower Festival of the Arts
As spring arrives in the North Georgia mountains, Dahlonega celebrates with the Wildflower Festival of the Arts — a juried art show set against a backdrop of blooming mountain wildflowers, dogwoods, and redbuds. The festival brings together regional and national artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, jewelry, and textile arts for a two-day outdoor show on the Public Square.
The timing aligns with spring hiking season in the mountains, when trail flowers are at their peak. Many visitors combine a festival visit with hikes to see the wildflower displays in the Chattahoochee National Forest or along the Appalachian Trail. The festival also features live acoustic music, local food vendors, and wine tasting from North Georgia wineries.

Dahlonega Wine & Jazz Festival
The Wine & Jazz Festival brings together the two most sophisticated pleasures of Dahlonega — its celebrated wine country and a weekend of jazz performance. Held on the Public Square, the festival features tasting booths from North Georgia wineries, live jazz performances from regional and national acts, and artisan food vendors. The combination of excellent wine, sophisticated music, and a charming mountain-town setting has made this one of the region’s most popular summer events.
The festival’s evening sessions are particularly atmospheric — warm summer nights on the square, the sound of jazz carrying across the historic storefronts, and a glass of North Georgia Viognier or Cabernet Franc in hand create a genuinely memorable experience.
Date: Second weekend of August
Location: Dahlonega Public Square · Admission: Ticketed wine access; music free
Wine Harvest Festival
The Wine Harvest Festival celebrates grape harvest season at Dahlonega’s vineyards with a weekend of harvest events, crush room tours, barrel tastings, and special release wines. Several wineries host their own harvest weekend events with grape stomping, guided vineyard tours, and harvest dinners. This is the most educational and behind-the-scenes time to visit the North Georgia wine country — the wineries are alive with the energy of the harvest, and winemakers are most accessible and engaged.
Date: Mid-September (varies by winery)

Victorian Christmas Celebration
Dahlonega transforms into a Victorian-era Christmas wonderland each December with gas lamp street lighting, carolers in period costume, decorated storefronts, and a community Christmas parade down the main street. The Victorian Christmas Celebration is one of the most charming small-town holiday events in Georgia — the historic architecture provides an authentic backdrop for the 19th-century aesthetic, and the mountain air gives the proceedings a crisp, genuinely wintry character.
The celebration runs through the month of December with specific events on Saturdays including caroling performances, visits with Santa, craft fairs, and holiday concerts at the Holly Theater. Tree lighting on the Public Square marks the official start of the season.
Date: Saturdays throughout December; Grand Illumination first Saturday
Location: Dahlonega Public Square · Admission: Free
Regular & Recurring Events
Dahlonega Farmers Market
Every Saturday morning from April through October, the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Farmers Market brings together local farmers, food producers, artisans, and craftspeople on the Public Square. The market offers fresh vegetables, local honey, artisan cheeses, eggs, cut flowers, baked goods, specialty food products, and locally crafted items. The market is a genuine community gathering point and an excellent source of provisions for a mountain picnic or cabin stay.

Second Friday Art Walks
On the second Friday evening of each month, Dahlonega’s galleries and studios open their doors for the Second Friday Art Walk — a casual, free event that encourages community members and visitors to explore the town’s arts scene in a social, relaxed setting. Galleries offer wine and light refreshments; artists are typically present to discuss their work. A walking map of participating venues is available at the Visitors Bureau.
When: Second Friday of each month, 5–8 pm · Location: Various galleries downtown
Winery Events & Live Music
Dahlonega’s wineries maintain active event calendars throughout the year, hosting live acoustic music on weekends, wine education classes, food and wine pairing dinners, release parties for new vintages, and private events. Check individual winery websites for current schedules. Frogtown Cellars, Three Sisters Vineyards, and Wolf Mountain Vineyards are particularly active event venues.
University of North Georgia Events
The University of North Georgia adds significant cultural programming to Dahlonega’s event calendar. The university hosts concerts, theatrical productions, athletic events, and lectures that are frequently open to the public. The UNG Performing Arts series brings professional musicians and performers to the campus auditorium throughout the academic year. The Corps of Cadets’ parade and review events on the campus parade grounds are a distinctive sight during the fall and spring semesters.
UNG’s annual commencement ceremony in May — during which graduating seniors are showered with gold dust from the Price Memorial Hall dome — is a deeply local tradition worth witnessing if your visit coincides with it.
Planning Your Visit Around Events
Dahlonega’s major festivals transform the town significantly — the Public Square that normally accommodates a few thousand people simultaneously fills to many times that capacity during Gold Rush Days and the Wine & Jazz Festival. During major events, traffic through downtown is restricted, parking is at a premium, restaurant waits are long, and accommodations are fully booked.
For visitors whose primary interest is the natural environment, wineries, or outdoor recreation, scheduling around the major festivals provides a more relaxed and intimate experience. For visitors specifically drawn to the festival atmosphere, the major events are genuinely impressive and worth the planning required.
The Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Convention and Visitors Bureau maintains a current events calendar and can provide information about specific events, accommodations availability, and transportation options during major festival weekends.
