Appalachian Trail Hiking

HIKING · BACKPACKING · THRU-HIKING

Dahlonega is the gateway to the southern Appalachian Trail. The trail enters Georgia at Springer Mountain and winds 75 miles through the North Georgia mountains before reaching the Amicalola Falls approach trail. Day hikers can access outstanding sections via Neels Gap (Blood Mountain) and Woody Gap, both within 20 minutes of Dahlonega. The Georgia AT segment rewards hikers with spectacular ridge-top views, old-growth forests, and rare wildflowers.

Chestatee River Tubing & Kayaking

WATER RECREATION · SEASONAL · FAMILY FRIENDLY

Nothing says Dahlonega summer like a lazy float down the Chestatee River. Local outfitters offer tube rentals and shuttle service for the popular 3-4 hour river float. For more active paddlers, kayak and canoe rentals let you explore the river’s calmer stretches. The Chestatee is also one of North Georgia’s premier trout fishing streams, with excellent wild rainbow and brown trout populations.

Gold Panning

FAMILY ACTIVITY · HISTORIC · ALL AGES

America’s first gold rush started right here in 1828, and gold is still found in the streams and creeks around Dahlonega today. Try your luck at the Consolidated Gold Mine’s outdoor panning sluice, or join a guided panning tour on a local creek. Several creeks around town have public access for recreational gold panning — pick up a pan at a local outfitter and you might go home with a small flake or two of genuine Dahlonega gold.

The North Georgia mountains offer excellent mountain biking on both purpose-built trails and forest service roads. The Jake Mountain Trail System north of Dahlonega provides miles of challenging singletrack through hardwood forest. Trail runners will find endless mileage on the AT and forest service trails, with the annual Blood, Sweat and Beers Mountain Race attracting runners from across the Southeast each spring.

Zip Lining & Aerial Adventures

ADVENTURE PARK · FAMILY FUN

Multiple adventure operators in the Dahlonega area offer zip line tours through the mountain forest canopy. These guided experiences are perfect for family groups and first-timers, combining the thrill of soaring above the treetops with stunning mountain panoramas. Most tours run 2-3 hours and require advance reservations, especially on weekends.

Seasonal Activities

Fall Foliage Season

SCENIC DRIVES · PHOTOGRAPHY · OCTOBER–NOVEMBER

The North Georgia mountains explode in color every October, and Dahlonega sits at the heart of the finest fall foliage viewing in the Southeast. GA-60, US-19 north toward Blairsville, and the winding vineyard roads all offer spectacular color. Peak foliage typically arrives in mid-to-late October, coinciding perfectly with the annual Gold Rush Days festival. The combination of fall color, wine harvest season, and festival energy makes October the absolute best time to visit Dahlonega.

Wine Harvest & Crush Season

WINERIES · SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER

Harvest season transforms Dahlonega’s wine country into something truly special. Many wineries host crush events, harvest festivals, and special wine releases during September and October. This is the ideal time to visit multiple wineries, taste wines at different stages of production, and experience the passion and hard work that goes into each bottle of North Georgia wine.
