A recent study reveals that the presence of electronic devices in the bedroom negatively impacts children’s sleep, regardless of whether they are used or not. Findings showed a consistent reduction in sleep quality and quantity, affecting students across a variety of countries and environments. The research indicates that the use of cell phones, tablets and computers by children and teens before sleep leads to poor sleep quality and increased daytime tiredness. Intriguingly, even children who did not use their devices in the bedroom still had disturbed sleep. The study suggests that the technology’s lights and sounds, as well as psychologically stimulating online content, could be the cause. On a larger scale, a US poll in 2013 reported that 72% of children and 89% of teens have at least one device in their sleeping quarters. Various experts emphasize the critical role of healthy sleep patterns for children’s development, citing the possible links between sleep disorders and ADHD.
