A New Challenge for X Users
The risk of coming across explicit content could be a matter of concern for millions of users. However, the platform provides measures to filter what shows up on your timeline. It’s recommended that parents guide their kids on how to use these features.
Child Protection Laws and Adult Content Online
In the light of this development, several states are enforcing child protection laws, aiming to curb minor exposure to online pornographic content. Activists are keen on spreading this protection nationwide.
Control Over NSFW Content
“Not Safe For Work” or NSFW pertains to the kind of content you wouldn’t want popping up on your screen at work or in a public space. If you’d rather avoid such content, here are the steps to follow:
- Click on More > Settings and privacy.
- Go to Privacy and safety > Content you see.
- Deselect the Display media that may contain sensitive content checkbox.
- Hit Search settings and select Hide sensitive content.

Customizing Your Feed
For further filtration of content, there is a Mute and Block option available within Privacy and Safety. This can help you weed out specific words, hashtags, and accounts you’d rather not see.
- Select Muted words.
- Click on the + symbol located at the top right.
- Input the terms you wish to eliminate – like #nsfw.
- Ensure you’ve chosen From anyone and Until you unmute the word.
- Finally, click Save.
Considering Child Safety on X
Although children are advised against using X, it’s essential to talk openly about the reason why these settings should not be altered if they do access it. An honest conversation can lead to a safer online experience.

However, if filtering within the platform doesn’t suffice, there are stricter content regulation options available on various devices.
- Apple users can resort to the Screen Time feature to limit content and app usage. Simply navigate to Settings > Screen Time on an iPhone or to System Settings > Screen Time on a MacBook.
- Android users can leverage Google Family Link to control everything from content to screen time.
- Windows users can deploy Microsoft Family Safety to control app and game usage, getting activity summaries along the way.
If you prefer not to use these options, several third-party parental-control apps can assist. These can block X altogether or restrict unsuitable content.
Revenge Porn Prohibition
Alongside these developments, Massachusetts lawmakers have forwarded a bill to Gov. Healey to ban ‘revenge porn’, further enhancing online safety.
