NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough has successfully voted from space in the 2016 US Presidential election. Amidst the backdrop of infinity, Kimbrough, who is currently onboard the International Space Station (ISS), made his electoral participation known through a Tumblr post by NASA.
The space agency revealed to Yahoo News that Kimbrough completed his voting process several days ago. This unique voting protocol for astronauts, who are in space on Election Day, begins approximately one year ahead of the launch day. It is at this stage that astronauts signify their interest in participating in particular elections.
Six months prior to the election, astronauts are issued with a “Voter Registration and Absentee Ballot Request – Federal Post Card Application” form. The pioneering citizen to vote from space was NASA astronaut David Wolf, who on the Russian Mir Space Station, voted in a 1997 local election. Credit: CNN.
