As we navigate our lives in an increasingly digital world, hackers and scammers have found new ways to exploit our reliance on technology. They cleverly design their schemes with an impressive show of legitimacy and urgency, making it even harder for unsuspecting users to stay safe. Remaining vigilant and staying a step ahead of these digital predators is key to ensuring our online safety.

A demystifying real-life instance highlighting the importance of such vigilance comes from a Tennessee resident, Judith. She received an email from a local store thanking her for her purchase of antivirus software costing $399.98. She opened the email and immediately called the contact provided using a landline. Having no computer and using only an iPhone, her phone calls failed to clear the confusion, adding to her worry instead. After consulting with her credit card company and discovering no charge for the stated purchase, she was left wondering how this could have happened and what she should have done differently.

Much like Judith, every digital user has likely been targeted by such tactics known as phishing. Hackers and scammers disguise themselves as reputable entities to trick users into opening deceptive documents or links, leaving digital data, like emails, vulnerable. Often, hackers may even infiltrate your personal information through phishing attacks, data breaches, or email harvesting.

While it’s fortunate that Judith wasn’t faced with any credit card charges, there are measures that iPhone users can follow to up their security:

1. Secure the iPhone with a passcode and enable biometric authentication like Face or Touch ID.
2. Change the Apple ID and email account password, ensuring they are unique and complex.
3. Enable two-factor authentication for any account impacted by phishing scams.
4. Check email settings for any pre-set forwarding rules and delete those you didn’t set.
5. Consider adding SIM-swapping protection to secure against swaps of your cellphone number to a fraudulent SIM card.
6. Install antivirus software to protect devices from malware.
7. Take additional safety measures such as identity theft protection, which monitor if your personal information is at risk on the dark web.

Despite staying vigilant, users may occasionally fall for scams. However, taking precautionary steps can help stay ahead of scammers.
