Using Safelisting to Manage Your Emails

How many times have you been eagerly waiting for a crucial email, only to find it languishing in your spam folder? This could be both exasperating for you and off-putting for the sender who has been anticipating your reply.

While your spam folder is instrumental in sieving out undesired messages, it’s vital to “safelist” the email addresses you want to land straight in your inbox. Simultaneously, you can still keep the actual spam emails away.

Decoding “Safelist” in the Email Context

“Safelisting” an email address implies tagging it as trusted in a specific list. By safelisting an email address, you ascertain that emails from this sender directly reach your inbox, bypassing the spam filters. This process becomes remarkably useful as occasionally, key emails may be wrongly categorized as unwanted spam.

Safelisting is an invaluable tool, especially in scenarios where loss of significant messages could wreak havoc like business or private communications. When you add an email address to your safelist, it implies that you trust this sender, and their emails hold importance for you. This step ameliorates your chances of receiving necessary emails, including our CyberGuy newsletter.

Part I: Safelisting Email Addresses across Diverse Email Platforms

Guaranteed, important emails must always land in your inbox and not get misplaced in the spam folder. A practical illustration of this is to safelist reliable email addresses, for which you need to add contacts to your email platform’s address book and make sure they reach you.

Below, we’ve provided a simple guide on how to do it through different email platforms:

Gmail:

Adding email addresses to contacts:

  • Navigate to Google Contacts (contacts.google.com).
  • Select “Create contact” and fill in the form with the email address you wish to safelist.
  • Subsequently, click on Save. This step automatically ensures that emails from this address go straight to your inbox and not your spam folder.

Safelisting the spam emails:

  • Go back to your Gmail inbox.
  • From the navigation bar on the left side, scroll down and click on the More tab.
  • Select Spam.
  • Identify the email from the sender you wish to safelist and ensure you uncheck the spam email.
  • Lastly, tap on Not spam.

Creating a non-spam filter:

  • From your Gmail inbox, access “Settings” (the gear icon), followed by “See all settings”.
  • Navigate to “Filters and Blocked Addresses” and click on it.
  • Next, select “Create a new filter.”
  • Enter the email address or domain you want to safelist in the “From” text field.
  • Click on “Create filter” with this search, check “Never send it to Spam,” then click on “Create filter”.

Yahoo Mail:

Adding a Yahoo contact:

  • Click the Contacts card icon located in the upper right corner of your inbox.
  • Next, click the three horizontal dots just below it on the right side
  • Select “Add a new Contact.”
  • Fill in the form with the sender’s details and click on “Save.”

Adding a filter in Yahoo Mail:

  • Click the Gear icon situated in the upper right corner and select “More Settings.”
  • Choose “Filters” from the left navigation menu
  • Select “Add new filters.”
  • Fill in the form with a filter name and the email address or domain you wish to safelist.
  • Finally, click “Save” to activate the filter.

And Much More…

The safelisting process varies slightly for different email platforms, including AOL Mail and other private email services like StartMail. Detailed steps for these can be found in the original article.

In conclusion, updating your safelist ensures that important emails land in your inbox eliminating the frustration of missing out on any critical communication.
