US Ryder Cup captain, Zach Johnson, remains open to the possibility of Tiger Woods joining the team at the upcoming tournament. Speaking ahead of the Sony Open in Hawaii, Johnson highlighted he would only consider selecting the 47-year-old golfer if he showed promise of being competitive.
Johnson expressed his trust in Woods’ investment in the team and his contributions to future Ryder Cups. He believes Woods would prioritize the team’s overall welfare and would clearly communicate his ability to play.
Last year, it was confirmed that Woods would partake in the US Ryder Cup in some way since he considered it a priority. However, Johnson acknowledges Woods’ health might pose a complication, especially considering recent events that make it tough to travel.
Woods’ career has been impacted by severe leg injuries resulting from a car crash in February 2021. After withdrawing from multiple events due to foot pain and visibly struggling with movement, the golfer admitted to Golf Digest that he would likely never go back to playing full-time.
Regardless, Woods accepts he might have to adjust his participation strategy, likely playing in select events throughout the year. He states this is his reality, which he understands and accepts.
The Ryder Cup, which shifts between Europe and the US, will take place in Italy this year at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club. The US team reclaimed the event in 2021 following a dominant performance over Europe at Whistling Straits.
