MLB Umpire Angel Hernandez Retires Suddenly

The unpredictable career of Major League Baseball (MLB) umpire, Angel Hernandez, has drawn to a close as he announced his retirement late Monday night.

Hernandezlast last took to the field on May 9, leading many to speculate why he did not make an appearance for the following three weeks, until he suddenly declared retirement.

As per the reports, Hernandez and MLB reached a financial agreement that prompted the 62-year-old to quit midway through the season.

Hernandez: “I was NOT kicked out”

In a statement on his retirement, Hernandez conveyed his plans to “spend more time with my family.”

In a discussion with “The Athletic”, Hernandez’s legal representative, Kevin Murphy asserted that his client was not forced out of his role.

Behind every MLB game since 1991, Hernandez confessed his contentment to have fulfilled his childhood dream of umpiring at the major league level. With the added joy of logging fruitful bonds with his friends and colleagues over the years.

Hernandez emphasized his association with the growth and promotion of minority representation in the world of baseball, stating his sense of honor for being an active part of the cause throughout his career as a major league umpire.

Reputation and Controversy Surrounding Hernandez

Hernandez had a reputation as one of the most contentious umpires in baseball. In this season, he rated 67th among 85 for accuracy in making calls. He was situated at the bottom by the end of last season.

As replay technology advances in tandem with the introduction of the automated strike zone, the professional scrutiny Hernandez receives has intensified. Notably, some of his questionable calls have caused uproars online.

Last month, he made some calls that are among the worst in the history of pitch tracking.

Several MLB players, including C.C. Sabathia, have criticized Hernandez, arguing that he shouldn’t be officiating games.

Hernandez climbed the ranks, beginning with the National League umpire in 1991 and has been officiating major league games since 2000.

Allegations Against MLB

Hernandez has previously accused the league of manipulating the performances of himself and other minority umpires, hampering more minority umpires from advancing to crew chiefs.

In March 2021, Hernandez lost a lawsuit against MLB which claimed racial discrimination. The application, lodged in 2017, alleged he had been discriminated against as he hadn’t been appointed to a World Series post since 2005 and was not promoted to crew chief.
