Ongoing tensions between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf were apparently inflamed by a recent social media post from golfer Phil Mickelson.
The Saudi-backed rival tour, LIV Golf, has encountered difficulties gaining world ranking accreditation for its tournaments, a situation that’s led to tension in the sport. The Official World Golf Ranking board rejected LIV’s accreditation bid in October 2022, several months after it was filed in July of the same year.
After the rejection, Greg Norman, CEO and Commissioner of LIV Golf, openly questioned the credibility and accuracy of the OWGR ranking system. In particular, questions concerning LIV Golf’s representation at major golfing events have persisted, even following the completion of the first out of the four majors.
The uproar was kindled further by a deleted social media post from Mickelson, responding to a claim that LIV players were earning more from tournament prizes but receiving no world ranking points. Mickelson’s post suggested if none of the players from LIV were allowed to compete in major games, it could significantly impact the future of golf.
In his pulled post, Mickelson alluded to the possibility of more players joining LIV over the following years and the potential backlash from sponsors and television networks. He concluded his post with the acronym “FAAFO,” implying a veiled threat.
The list for the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla recently released by The PGA of America includes sixteen players from LIV among the contenders; seven of them are among the top 100 players worldwide.
