Unexpected Retirement of Michael Gallup from NFL at the Age of 28

In a shocking turn of events, Michael Gallup, longtime wide receiver for the Las Vegas Raiders, has retired from his NFL career. Aged just 28, he announced his departure on Tuesday. After spending six seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, Gallup had recently signed a contract with the Raiders. However, the Raiders have now added him to their reserve/retired list.

Announcement of Gallup’s Retirement

Although Gallup himself did not officially announce his retirement via social media, he did share multiple messages of goodwill and well-wishes from friends and former colleagues. According to Clarence Hill Jr. from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Gallup’s decision was influenced by his heart not being in the game anymore.

Gallup’s Career Highlights

Gallup was initially selected as a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by Dallas right out of Colorado State. Come the second season, Gallup had been targeted more frequently. He managed to reel in 66 of 113 thrown balls, gaining 1,107 yards and finishing with six touchdowns.

Gallup’s Setbacks and Struggles

After achieving a successful season in 2019 with 59 catches, 105 targets, and 843 yards, his 2021 season took a hit with him suffering a torn ACL. Dealing with the setback, he was given a five-year contract extension worth $62.5 million before the 2022 season could commence. However, his targeted throws steadily started decreasing, with 74 targets in 2022, followed by 57 in 2023.

This offseason, Dallas offered Gallup an opportunity for a trade, but eventually made the decision to release him from the team. Later, Gallup signed a deal with the Raiders, being included alongside Davante Adams in the team’s player roster.

Gallup’s Future

Gallup has now entered a different phase of his life, exiting from his NFL career. His heart might not be set on the field anymore, but his legacy and impact as a talented NFL wide receiver will definitely be remembered.
