Spanish golfer Jon Rahm secured his third PGA Tour title by winning the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, making a remarkable recovery from a seven-shot deficit. Despite a bogey on the first hole, Rahm managed to complete the final round 10-under-par 63.
The world No. 5 golfer finished the tournament with an impressive 27-under-par, beating double major winner Collin Morikawa by two shots. Morikawa led by six shots into the final round, but three bogeys on the back nine allowed Rahm to close the gap and secure the win.
During a BBC interview, Rahm stated he required a strong performance and a couple of errors from Morikawa to close the gap. This victory marks the eighth win on the PGA Tour for the 28-year-old Rahm.
The Spanish golfer also made history as the first winner of the tour’s maiden elevated purse event, designed to compete with LIV Golf. The victory netted Rahm $2.7 million out of the total purse of $15 million. This tournament is the first of 17 events to feature the elevated purse, with most of them boasting prizes of at least $20 million.
Although Rahm triumphed, Morikawa expressed his disappointment over his performance, despite securing $1.5 million for his second-place finish. The Open champion said he was frustrated after working hard and botching three swings at critical times.
