Ex-Boston Red Sox Pitcher, Austin Maddox Arrested in a Florida Sex Sting Operation
The former Boston Red Sox pitcher, Austin Maddox was taken into custody in Florida in connection to an underage sex sting operation.
Jacksonville Sheriff, T.K. Waters, mentioned that Maddox was one of the 27 people apprehended in an operation involving multiple agencies.
Accusations against Maddox and the others arrested include soliciting sex from individuals they believed to be minors on the internet, as per official reports.
Maddox’s Response to the Accusations
James Hill, his defense attorney, has stated that the 33-year-old Maddox plans to contest these allegations. He is set to enter a plea of not guilty if formal charges are filed against him.
Maddox currently faces four felony counts, which includes traveling to meet a minor after soliciting a child using a computer. Maddox’s bail is set at $300,000 and he is currently behind bars.
According to an arrest report, Maddox had communicated with an undercover agent, who was impersonating an underage girl on April 28. Despite being informed that the girl was just 14, Maddox expressed an intention to engage in sexual activities with her. Following an agreed upon meeting at a specific location, he was subsequently arrested by the authorities.
Maddox’s Baseball Career
Maddox, a Jacksonville native, only played 13 games in the Major League Baseball (MLB) in 2017. In his short stint, he played for a total of 17.1 innings, during which he gave up 13 hits but only allowed a single earned run, clocking an impressive ERA of 0.52.
However, his time in the big league was cut short due to shoulder injuries. Maddox had a noteworthy college career at the University of Florida which led to him being drafted by Boston in the third round of the 2012 MLB Draft.
Despite his promising start, Maddox spent most of his professional career in the minor leagues. His last pitch was in 2018 for Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket.
Boston Red Sox released Maddox in 2019.
