Democratic National Committee paid Trump prosecutor Matthew Colangelo thousands of dollars for political consulting in 2018, Fox News Digital reports. Colangelo currently serves as a top prosecutor with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s Office and delivered opening statements in the criminal trial of former President Trump.
Colangelo joined Bragg’s office in December 2022 following the resignations of two prosecutors investigating Trump. He left a senior role at the Biden Justice Department to work with Bragg. Charges were brought against Trump in April 2023, leading to GOP concerns about potential politicization of the case.
House Republicans are investigating Colangelo’s past work as he continues to prosecute Trump. The DNC made two payments of $6,000 each to Colangelo in January 2018 for political consulting, according to FEC records.
After serving in the New York Attorney General’s office, Colangelo worked on Trump lawsuits and investigations under current AG Letitia James. He also held positions in the Obama administration before joining the Biden Justice Department and later transitioning to Bragg’s office.
The House Judiciary Committee is looking into Colangelo’s employment at the Justice Department amid concerns about politically motivated prosecutions. Colangelo is one of the prosecutors charging Trump with falsifying business records, with the case involving multiple felony charges.
Prosecutors argue that Trump’s alleged actions were in violation of New York State law related to election prevention or promotion. Coupled with the falsification of business records, these charges could lead to felony crimes.
