The San Diego Border Patrol Sector has apprehended over 200 Chinese migrants on two separate days this week, surpassing the total number of Chinese migrants encountered in all of Fiscal Year 2021. According to a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) source, on May 1 and May 2, Border Patrol agents encountered over 200 Chinese nationals each day. The total number of Chinese migrants encountered in two days in this sector is higher than the entire southern border in FY 21. The numbers have been on the rise, with over 24,200 encounters so far in FY 2022 compared to 342 in FY 2021.
Lawmakers have expressed concerns about potential espionage by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the movement of fentanyl into the US. While some migrants have mentioned seeking a better life in the US, others worry about the implications of increased illegal immigration. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues to enforce US immigration laws, but challenges arise when it comes to deporting nationals back to countries like China, which are often uncooperative with deportation efforts. ICE Director Patrick Lechleitner highlighted the difficulties in sending back nationals from certain countries, including China, but noted some progress in recent discussions with Chinese officials.
