The US has decided to halt shipments of precision bombs to Israel in response to concerns over Israeli forces’ operations in Rafah, as reported by a US official. A shipment of 1,800 2,000-pound bombs and 1,700 500-pound bombs has been put on hold due to fears they could be used in Rafah, where over a million people are seeking refuge.
Discussions are ongoing between the US and Israel on how to address the humanitarian needs of civilians in Rafah and how to handle Hamas differently in that area. The review of proposed weapons transfers began in April, and the US has now paused the shipment pending further evaluation.
The US official emphasized that these actions are not related to the Israeli supplemental appropriations passed recently. The US remains committed to ensuring that Israel receives all allocated funds, including the most recent $827 million worth of weapons and equipment.
The decision to pause the shipments comes after two Israeli officials reported a halt in US-manufactured ammunition following a recent attack by Hamas. Israeli forces have taken operational control of the Gazan side of the Rafah Crossing as part of a counterterrorism operation targeting Hamas terrorists in eastern Rafah.
