We are witnessing a revolution in education with advocating for school choice seeing a surge across the nation. It began in 2021 with eleven states passing universal school-choice policies. This trend has continued into the next year, with Alabama recently approving a universal school-choice bill. Similarly, Georgia and Wyoming introduced their first-ever education savings account initiatives, and Louisiana’s House passed a universal school choice law with a 72-to-32 supermajority vote.
In his new book, “The Parent Revolution: Rescuing Your Kids from the Radicals Ruining Our Schools,” author Corey DeAngelis examines this accelerating trend, attributing it to families rising against special interests seeking to monopolize the classroom, restricting children’s learning and development. The book is dedicated to the parents nationwide who are fighting for their children’s educational rights and the teachers unions that spurred them into action.
DeAngelis criticizes teachers unions for using the pandemic as leverage to extract additional funding while compromising children’s education. The American Federation of Teachers, led by President Randi Weingarten, stands accused of lobbying to make in-person schooling more challenging in 2021. Local affiliates have faced accusations of fear-mongering to keep schools closed, pushing socialist agendas, and using inflammatory images such as fake body bags and tombstones in their fight.
The backlash to these actions, according to DeAngelis, was parents getting firsthand insights into the classroom through remote learning. Many were shocked to find the schools’ values significantly misaligned with their own, and leftist indoctrination valued over actual education.
Angry parents were often dismissed or vilified as “Nazis” or “domestic terrorists” for speaking against these practices at school board meetings. In response, many retreated from public education, instead opting for private schools, charter schools, or homeschooling, paving the way for the ‘parent revolution.’
The author blames Weingarten for awakening the sleeping giant–parents rebelling against the education system. The book hopes to draw attention to her mistakes and the resulting implications for democracy and children’s future. DeAngelis thanks the teachers unions for advancing education freedom inadvertently and dedicates his book to these awakened parents, emphasizing the importance of parents having a say in their children’s education.
