An Era of Political Race Chat

Joe Biden’s replacement with the younger, African American and Indian descent, Kamala Harris, on the expected Democratic presidential ticket, has made the 2024 election about race, creating a spell of regression.

Virtual Political Gatherings

In the past week, we have witnessed online gatherings that allude to political rallies and Maoist struggle sessions. These sessions have the semblance of virtual COVID cocktail hours thrown in for good measure.

During one of these gatherings by white women, a TikTok user named “Mrs Frazzled” advised the participants to avoid being offensive by not objectively correcting a person of color during discussions. The implication, disturbingly, is that interactions should be different, dependent on skin color.

In days gone by, this sort of discrimination was known merely as racism.

White Men’s Advocacy Group

A similar incident occurred during a meeting by a group referred to as “white dudes.” The founder of this group, Ross Morales, suggested that historically, whenever white American men have come together, it was often under hateful circumstances, making a reference to the KKK.

If past actions are the basis of judgement, it is also worth remembering that white men participated in the freedom fight wearing forage caps, wore hard metal hats in WWII, and helped the founding of a nation that was based on liberty, thereby showing that they aren’t uniquely dangerous. Making blanket assumptions on the basis of race is no less racist.

Comments from Public Figures

Contributing to the narrative, Molly Jong Fast, a notable figure, took to MSNBC to claim that JD Vance only desires the birth of white children in the U.S. Ironically, the vice presidential candidate’s own children are of mixed race, just like Kamala Harris.

It all seems to boil down to an odd logic, where white liberals view themselves as irreparable racists yet supposedly superior to Trump-supporting individuals, who, by their reasoning, are unaware of their racist tendencies.

The rules of this logic aren’t consistent, evident in the stray behavior towards Clarence Thomas or Ben Carson, despite their race.

The Ideology of Wokeness

What we see is Political correctness transmogrifying into wokeness – an ideology indulged by those privileged enough to worry over such matters. The average American, however, doesn’t think or behave this way. Most aren’t going about their day worrying about how to interact differently with people of different races or self-reflecting on how they can potentially be less racist. These are primarily concerns bred from having much leisure and education.

Guilting white people into voting for Kamala Harris, based on supposed unique sins of their race, might come off as a good political strategy for some. But regardless of its effectiveness, it is damaging to our unity as a nation. It relentlessly suggests that white people are inherently cruel and that they are the sole saviors of marginalized people of color, who lack the capability to solve their issues or have a diversity of thought he.

The Implications of Racial Division

At a time when paths towards national unity are desperately needed, these approaches only serve to divide us based on our immutable characteristics. This overt racial provocation is distasteful.

Perhaps, Democrats and all Americans should step out of these ideologically self-reinforcing online meetings and interact with real people. In doing so, they may find those who disagree with them, which might lead to enlightening conversations despite racial differences.

Depicting Donald Trump as a risk to democracy wasn’t making an impact, particularly when the alternative was an ostensibly sluggish Joe Biden. Therefore, Democrats have shifted the narrative to painting America as a volatile space where race issues are rampant and where supposedly noble white saviors are essential.

Don’t fall into this trap. Use your observations within your community and religious gatherings to judge for yourself whether we live in a hub of racism or not. Don’t rely on the opinions of secluded celebrities or TV pundits. Upon close evaluation, you will find that this horrific vision they have painted of our country is nothing more than a politically motivated illusion.
