The criminal trial of former President Donald Trump in Manhattan took an unexpected turn on Tuesday as notorious ex-porn star, Stormy Daniels, was called to the witness stand. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has claimed to have had sexual relations with Trump 18 years ago, something which he denies. She was also known for profiting off her brief association with Trump, including publishing a salacious tell-all book and headlining strip club appearances.
Daniels’ testimony, however, has been pointed out to be largely irrelevant to the case. It was also noted that she has a history of inconsistent narratives regarding her purported encounter with Trump. At one point, she recanted her signed statement denying the affair, and then admitted on the stand she had faked her signature.
The case against Trump involves alleged falsification of business records, a charge that has nothing to do with Daniels. The prosecutors have been accused of calling Daniels as a witness to smear Trump’s reputation.
Under cross-examination, Daniels admitted her aversion towards Trump, describing him as an “orange turd.” Questions have been raised about the relevance and necessity of calling Daniels to the witness stand, given that her relationship with Trump and subsequent payments had already been introduced as evidence through prior witnesses.
The prosecutors and the presiding judge have faced criticism for allowing sexually graphic testimony into the trial. Trump’s lawyers demanded a mistrial as a result of what they deem as unfair practices, but the request was denied by the judge.
As yet, no evidence has been presented to show that Trump was involved in booking the payments to Daniels as “legal expenses.” Critics have accused the prosecutor of creating a phony case and polluting it with irrelevant and prejudicial evidence. The legal proceedings have been labelled as an assault on the rule of law.
