Increased Threat from ISIS-K Amid Weak US Immigration Policies
The extremist terror outfit, ISIS-K (ISIS Khorasan), is strengthening its spine, intensifying the threat level globally. Horrifying images of the group’s violent activities, including genocide and decapitations, haunt the world since 2014. The responsibility of curtailing such threats should be the prime role of different nation’s governing bodies. However, the US government’s lax immigration policies under President Joe Biden’s tenure can potentially provide an entry point for ISIS-K into the country.
Rising Concerns Over Borders
Recent media reports have highlighted instances of ISIS-K associates infiltrating through the country’s southern border. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) detained and later released Jovokhir Attoev, an illegal Uzbek immigrant, in February 2022, following the incumbent protocol. Uzbek authorities later revealed Attoev’s affiliation with ISIS-K.
Terrorist Entrants Within the Country
It is not limited to one individual. The CBP had reportedly failed to verify the identity of another illegal immigrant, Mohammad Kharwin, suspected to be a member of a notorious terror outfit that has killed American soldiers. Both men, military-aged and having traveled thousands of miles through various nations, were allowed to roam freely within the country for extended periods before their respective arrests. These cases are mere glimpses into a larger problem of unknown terrorists making their way into the US.
Unchecked Immigration amid Terror Threats
Since Biden’s presidency began, CBP has recorded over nine million encounters with illegal immigrants. The absence of detention or expulsion, accompanying a lack of information about the majority of these individuals, is a grave concern. The troubling fact is that over 6,000 of those immigrants are from countries where ISIS-K exhibits a strong presence. The extent of ISIS-K or other terror group affiliates circulating within the unknown immigrant population remains uncertain.
Foreign Smugglers and Border Security
Reports hint at the involvement of foreign smugglers with ISIS connections aiding illegal immigration along the southern border. This calls for an urgent need for strict enforcement of immigration laws and a fortified border. It is crucial to remember that ISIS-K, the group that has inflicted massive harm in Kabul and glorified the 9/11 attacks, could already be hiding within the country, planning catastrophic strikes.
Time for Policy Change
All the while, the Biden administration’s open-border policies, which they advocated during their campaign and have implemented over the last three years, prevail. The continuous facilitation of the largest, unchecked migration event in recent U.S. history bodes ill for national security. The administration must immediately address these glaring issues, lest we become mere spectators in the face of an impending disaster.
