The Middle East and the wider world have been greatly impacted following the shocking news of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi’s death after a helicopter crash in the northern region of Iran. Although this sudden occurrence is unlikely to stimulate any immediate modifications in Iran, this sudden shift sets up an opening to revise the approach taken by Team Biden to ensure safety in America, Israel, and across the Middle East.
Unfortunately, the Biden administration reacted with “condolences” instead of effectively deterring the regime’s intent to harm Americans and our allies. We must remember, instead of honouring Raisi, he was named the “Butcher of Tehran” for his leading role in the mass execution of tens of thousands of innocent Iranians in 1988. While he finally came to be known as the ‘president,’ he was really chief servant for the ayatollah.
An Insight into Raisi’s Rule and Legacy
Raisi’s most significant duty was to torment the Iranian people as the region’s despotic regime continued to rob and exploit them. This reality was clearly seen during the regime’s ruthless clampdown on widespread protests between 2022 and 2023.
Any memory of Raisi should be buried in the darkest annals of human history. The world is definitively better without him. Raisi’s countless victims were people who dreamt of a better future for Iran: the mothers, daughters, fathers, and sons executed heinously. These are the true people America should venerate in light of his demise.
It was disgraceful and appalling for our own State Department to extend our “official condolences” to the regime upon news of Raisi’s death, while also voicing our “support” for the Iranian people. Furthermore, we should give our condolences to the families of victims like Mahsa Amini, who paid the ultimate price for defying the regime’s oppressive hijab standards.
The Aftermath of Raisi’s Death
Although Raisi’s death was unexpected, it is doubtful his demise will trigger any notable changes or reforms within Iran. The real authority lies with Ayatollah Khamenei and the ruling clerics. Nonetheless, Raisi’s death presents a prospect for the Biden administration to make substantial, beneficial alterations to its Iran policy to protect US interests, Americans, and our allies.
The administration must halt indulging the regime and its allies. Swift action needs to be taken to dislodge the Houthi presence in the Red Sea and restore safety and accessibility to the global shipping lane for commercial vessels. Additionally, team Biden should give Israel unreserved support as it enters the final stage of its campaign to eradicate Hamas. This would be a clear message to the regime and whomever Ayatollah Khamenei selects as his successor that America is no longer a feeble entity in pursuit of a deal.
Learning from Past Mistakes
Regrettably, the Biden administration’s offering of condolences to the regime indicates it has not learned from its prior mistakes. The administration has failed to acknowledge that dangling a $6 billion exchange for five American hostages only promotes more hostage-taking. They have also failed to address the reality that insignificant retaliations like striking vacant warehouses or eliminating a few inconsequential individuals in the desert only encourages the regime’s assault on American interests.
Iran’s status as the world’s foremost state sponsor of terror, its ever-increasing power as it fosters closer bonds with global miscreants such as Russia and China, and its role as a major hurdle to peace in the Middle East must be acknowledged. We need a president who understands these basic realities and takes the necessary actions to guarantee safety in America and the world.
