Biden Administration’s Flip Flop On Medicare Advantage Cuts and Its Impact On Seniors
President Biden stated earlier this year that he would not approve of “…enormous handouts to extreme Republicans… while escalating your costs and reducing Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.” Yet, he is doing exactly that presently.
Irrespective of the alarms raised by both Republicans and Democrats, the Biden administration’s Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services has confirmed cuts to the favorable and productive Medicare Advantage (MA) program.
What is Medicare Advantage (MA)?
Medicare Advantage is a public-private collaboration that empowers health insurance agencies to grant reasonably priced and all-inclusive medial coverage to Americans over 65 and disabled individuals. By inhibiting access to MA, Biden is disobeying a fundamental campaign assurance to refrain from reducing benefits for seniors, a claim he has consistently made for the last three years.
The reversal in Biden’s decision will burden seniors with additional costs averaging $33 per month. In the words of Raymond James analyst Chris Meekins, “President Biden’s team is wagering that MA beneficiaries won’t discern before the election the benefits they stand to lose in January 2025 due to Biden’s actions.”
The Popularity of Medicare Advantage
Republicans can assist Biden’s team in losing this wager by capitalizing on the widespread appeal of MA. Last year, a staggering 90% of voters expressed that a candidate’s strategy for lowering healthcare costs would greatly influence their voting choice, with 39% agreeing to possibly change political alliances to endorse a candidate who prioritizes reducing healthcare expenses. Furthermore, an impressive 90% of seniors endorse their current plan. More than 31 million Americans have enrolled in MA plans, constituting more than half of the total Medicare population.
MA surpasses traditional Medicare in 16 out of 16 clinical measures, making it an ideal selection for those desiring authority over their healthcare. Biden’s decision to eliminate their cost-effective, versatile health plans in preference of pricier, government-regulated outcomes needs to be communicated to this crucial voting demographic.
The Appeal of Medicare Advantage
The MA model has proven successful and is widely recognized by the American public. MA plans deliver the same perks as traditional Medicare at just 83 cents on the dollar, meaning the program also benefits taxpayers. However, MA’s appeal is faded by the contemporary Left’s preference for public sector dependence over private sector innovation in America.
Biden’s plans to eliminate MA in favor of more government-controlled “Medicare-for-all”, offering fewer options for doctors and coverages, is opposed by many. A shining example is the recent letter from Rep. Pramila Jayapal and 59 far-left House Democrats to Biden arguing for restructuring of Traditional Medicare and redistribution of funds presently allocated to MA.
The Impact of Increased Government Control on the Healthcare Industry
Expanding federal control over insurance options is unlikely to be beneficial. For evidence, we only need to look at local DMVs, and the excessively long waiting times at VA hospitals. The Biden administration’s moves towards universal healthcare echo the promises made by President Obama in 2013 that “If you like your insurance, you can keep it” as the Affordable Care Act was sold to the public. However, the program’s rollout saw increased costs, and Americans couldn’t keep their existing insurance or doctors. Even NPR, a left-leaning news source, named Obama’s claim as the ‘Lie of the Year’.
Fast forward a decade and Biden appears to be following in his predecessor’s footsteps, promising better healthcare to seniors while attacking MA. The real threat to healthcare for American seniors comes from these cuts to MA by the Biden Administration, who continues to unjustly accuse conservatives of targeting Social Security and Medicare. Voters should be wary this November of promises of healthcare “reform” from the Democrats. If you liked your insurance, you couldn’t keep it. If you like your Medicare Advantage plan, Biden may take it away.
