Independent presidential candidate for the 2024 US election, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has been inconsistent in stating his opinion on the topic of abortion. Even his campaign staff and running mate seem to be uninformed about his position on this critical issue.
Recently, he claimed that abortion should be legally permissible up until the point of fetal viability outside the womb. He further stated his support for third-trimester abortions but only if it’s essential to preserve the life of the mother. However, a few days earlier, in a podcast interview, he expressed opposition towards any government restrictions on abortions, even if it’s full term.
His contradictory views continue to confuse his supporters and potential voters. Even his advisor, Angela Stanton King, has publicly admitted to being unaware of Kennedy’s perspectives.
Nicole Shanahan, Kennedy’s running mate, believed that he supports limits on abortion, which contradicts his stated position in the podcast interview. The inconsistency in Kennedy’s stance on the abortion has been evident since the beginning of his campaign, causing confusion and surprise among his team.
Kennedy, known for promoting anti-vaccine misinformation, does not frequently discuss the issue of abortion vocally in his campaigning. In fact, a Washington Post analysis found that Kennedy mentioned the term “abortion” only twice out of 11 speeches and campaign events. His campaign has informed that Kennedy purposely steers clear of discussing abortion to avoid further controversy.
With abortion rights being a significant issue in the election, especially following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in 2022 to abolish federal protections for the procedure, Kennedy’s ambiguity on the matter may prove problematic.
