The humble clog has established itself as a popular shoewear choice among many, with its comfort, support, and unique functional chic, or ‘ugly chic’, style. However, are they as good as their advocates claim? Podiatrist Dr. Saylee Tulpule, known on Instagram as @thesoledoctor, weighed in on this debate. According to Tulpule, clogs are popular amongst people who stand for long periods due to their arch support and cushioning. They are also typically slip-resistant and waterproof, making them suitable for professionals like nurses, teachers, and chefs. Tulpule explained that clogs can be beneficial for those with specific medical conditions, such as flat feet, heel pain, tendonitis, and lower back issues due to their degree of arch support and cushion. However, she advised against fashion clogs with high heels over three inches or rigid wooden soles, as they could increase the risk of tripping, straining the Achilles tendon and worsening flat-feet conditions. Tulpule recommended Dansko, Birkenstock and Sanita brands for practical, comfortable and supportive clogs, noting that the Dansko brand received the American Podiatrist Medical Association’s Seal of Approval.
