Orville Allen, a 98-year-old veteran of World War II and the Korean War, has been identified as the oldest American to ever donate an organ. His liver was transplanted into a 72-year-old woman following his death on May 29. Allen was in good health until he suffered a fall at his home. Swelling in his brain could not be controlled, leading to his death. His family agreed to the liver transplantation. The head of Mid-America Transplant, which coordinated the donation, encouraged medical staff not to exclude potential donors based on age but to evaluate their medical eligibility. In 2021, the number of organ donations from deceased individuals exceeded 16,000, resulting in over 46,000 organ transplants.
