Florida has made history by becoming the first state to permit c-section deliveries outside of hospital settings, according to KFF News. The measure, passed in March 2024, allows physicians to perform natural childbirths and C-sections in “advanced birth centers.” Claiming lower costs and a more relaxed birth environment, Women’s Care Enterprises strongly supported this change.

Patients classified as “low risk of complications” are eligible for these services, which include overnight stays post-procedure. This move could potentially enhance access to maternal healthcare, particularly in areas where maternity services are limited due to hospital closures. Nonetheless, the new legislation has sparked worries within the medical community about the potential risk factors, with some professionals expressing doubts about the safety of C-sections being performed outside hospitals.

Florida State Senator Gayle Harrell, sponsor of the bill, clarified that the same stringent standards of staffing and infection control found at outpatient surgery centers would apply to birth centers. Despite this, several healthcare officials, including Mary Mayhew, CEO of the Florida Hospital Association, have voiced significant concerns over the potential hazards linked with C-sections such as haemorrhaging.
