Beach Boys founder and musical icon Brian Wilson has been placed under court-ordered conservatorship due to what his doctor diagnoses as a “major neurocognitive disorder.” The decision was made by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May following Wilson’s agreement to the arrangement and acknowledgement of his inability to make health care decisions.
This move followed the death of Wilson’s wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, in January. She formerly managed most of his affairs. As conservators, Jean Sievers, Wilson’s publicist and manager LeeAnn Hard who have had a close relationship with Wilson for many years, will now be responsible for his personal and medical matters.
The judge’s decision was also influenced by no notable objections, and he allowed Wilson’s children Carnie and Wendy, to be included in any communications about their father. The daughter duo had earlier asked for a hold on the proceedings but agreed in the end.
Wilson, famous for his role in the Beach Boys and his struggle with mental health issues, is now reliant on help for his physical needs. In spite of his condition, Wilson has a clear understanding of his identity and current situation, as noted by Robert Frank Cipriano, a court-appointed attorney.
