Taking care of our feet’s health is crucial considering how frequently we use them for movement. Understanding this, foot and ankle health experts including Dr. Ebonie Vincent, a well-respected podiatrist in California, share behaviors they steer clear of to safeguard their feet.

These behaviors include excessive wear of Crocs, running in shoes not designed for it, and wearing high heels too often. Dr. Vincent advises against wearing Crocs for activities that involve prolonged periods of standing or walking as it can lead to foot problems. Instead, she recommends opting for reliable walking shoe brands like Brooks, Asics, or New Balance. Women who live in high heels could risk developing foot pain from bunions, corns, heel spurs, or even Achilles tendon pain.

Working from home due to Covid-19 has led to an increase in foot and ankle issues due to people not wearing shoes as frequently, warranting the need for supportive footwear even at home. Relatedly, Vincent advises against constant barefoot existence as it can lead to calluses or fat pad atrophy which could limit your footwear options in the future.

Regarding warding off infections, Dr. Jason Gold, a certified podiatrist, advises against going barefoot in public places like hotel bathrooms due to the risk of contracting plantar’s wart or verruca. Also, frequent visits to nail salons that don’t sterilize their instruments increase the risk of fungal or bacterial infections.

The type of socks worn also matters. Podiatrist Dr. Jay Spector notes that cotton socks retain moisture and can lead to blisters and foot and nail fungus. He recommends synthetic materials that can wick out sweat and moisture.

People with diabetes are specially advised to never go barefoot due to the risk of injuries not felt due to nerve damage from the disease. Regular professional foot exams and proper fitting shoes are recommended in such cases.
