On Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris initiated a national economic tour with a stop in Atlanta, Georgia. The tour aims to connect Black voters in pivotal states with resources relevant to them, and to highlight how Democrats’ policies have benefited Black Americans. Harris stated the main goal of this trip is to inform Black business owners and entrepreneurs about resources available to help their ventures.

While in Atlanta, Harris engaged with a predominantly Black audience of 400 attendees, discussing the ways in which Joe Biden’s administration has endeavoured to better Black US citizens’ capacity for upward mobility and business success. Harris specifically mentioned efforts to close the racial wealth gap that has been exacerbated by past government policies, such as the implementation of small-business grants and student loan forgiveness initiatives.

Next on the tour agenda is Detroit, Michigan. This focus on engaging Black communities, particularly Black men, comes amidst a decline in their support for the Democratic party, as revealed by recent polls. The crowd at the Atlanta event mostly comprised Black male political and business leaders, as well as a group of students from Morehouse College, an all-Black men’s college.

Harris also spotlighted the Biden administration’s significant legislation and investment into historically Black colleges and universities. Furthermore, she recognized the planned allocation of over $150 million for The Stitch, a project aimed at reinvigorating Atlanta’s downtown area, which is part of a broader White House scheme to correct societal harm inflicted by federal transportation projects that disproportionately displaced Black communities.
