Biden Launches New Ad Campaign Following Tumultuous Debate

Trying to bounce back from a less-than-stellar debate performance in Atlanta last week, President Biden is launching a 60-second TV ad starting Monday. The campaign ad is set to run in crucial battleground states, a decision that comes as he fights to solidify his standing in the 2024 race.

The Advertisement’s Message: Biden Bounces Back

The upcoming ad, previewed exclusively by The New York Times, strategically avoids showcasing the President’s stumbling debate vocals before a crowd that surpassed 50 million viewers. Rather, it showcases a contrastingly zealous Biden from the subsequent day’s North Carolina rally. Dressed in an open-collared dress shirt under his suit jacket, he delivered the dynamic performance his supporters had craved.

The ad kicks off with Biden, 81, mounting criticism against former President Trump, before taking an introspective look at his own shortcomings, accompanied by evocative music.

Unexpected Setbacks and Biden’s Resilience

Setting the tone of his pitch, the ad features Mr. Biden saying, “I may not be a young man, but I certainly understand this role. I realize the difference between right and wrong, how to uphold the truth. And, like countless Americans, I recognize that you have to get up when you get knocked down.”

He emphasizes the last part of his statement with a convincing fist pump. This rally for resilience follows a 72-hour stretch marked with intense discussions circulating Biden’s debate performance among disturbed campaign donors, culminating with equal resistance from the White House and Biden’s team to support their leader.

All through Sunday, the president was at Camp David, bolstered by his closest family members who encouraged him to continue the fight. This spirit of resilience happens to be the highlight of the new ad.

Biden’s Determination and Trustworthiness

“Joe Biden is a president who will never shy away from a fight, and that’s what Americans deserve,” said Michael Tyler, the communication director of Biden’s campaign.

The initial half of the ad spotlights Biden’s views on Trump’s comments during the debate on issues ranging from the economy, the pandemic, and his involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol intrusion.

As the ad opens, Biden asks, “Did you watch Trump last night?” While Biden stumbled through the unrehearsed format of the debate, he relied on a teleprompter for the North Carolina rally, from which the ad’s comments have been extracted.

Aiming at Diverse Audience Segments

The Biden team announced plans to broadcast the ad both digitally and on TV across battleground states. They’re targeting a young, diverse demographic via channels like ESPN, TNT, Bravo, FX, and Comedy Central, alongside popular sports programs, and the fresh season of “The Bachelorette.”

After his underwhelming debate presence, the Biden campaign has been actively quelling calls for Mr. Biden to step aside. Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, the campaign chair, confidently dismissed such concerns in her Saturday evening memo.

She reiterated, “It was always going to be a close election. We’ve always known that”.
