Presidential Hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Advocates for $5 Billion in Reparations for Black Farmers
Independent presidential contender, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has declared his intention to allocate $5 billion in reparation funds to Black farmers if elected.
The revelation came during an interview with John Boyd Jr., the founder of the National Black Farmers Association.
“This $5 billion isn’t just money, it’s an entitlement,” Kennedy argued, in a report by the Washington Examiner. “This is a loan that Black farmers have been owed since long ago, which was pilfered through discriminatory practices.”
Boyd had earlier initiated legal action against the Biden administration due to its failure to provide compensations that could have aided socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers. According to the Examiner, the funds were originally destined for the American Rescue Plan but faced obstacles after white farmers claimed that it breached their constitutional rights.
This blocked money was eventually channeled to the Inflation Reduction Act, with $2 billion earmarked for farmers subjected to discrimination and $3 billion set aside to be disbursed by the Agriculture Department towards farmers facing financial hardships, independent of their race.
Kennedy committed to axing those responsible for scuppering the original plan, as reported by the Examiner.
Earlier this week, Kennedy’s campaign confirmed it had gathered the necessary funds to ensure ballot accessibility across all 50 U.S states. This followed an $8 million donation from his running mate, Nicole Shanahan.
Kennedy’s name is now officially on the ballot in Texas, making it the sixth state where his campaign has succeeded in securing a spot. This follows his successful entry in Utah, Michigan, California, Delaware, and Oklahoma.
Additionally, his campaign claims to have gathered the requisite number of signatures for him to feature on the ballots in New Hampshire, Nevada, Hawaii, North Carolina, Idaho, Nebraska, Iowa, and Ohio.
Recent controversies sparked when Kennedy’s past comments, including his comparison of the Tea Party movement to the Confederacy and his pro-choice stance on abortion rights, even in full-term pregnancies, resurfaced in the media.
Based on the average of five-way polls, Kennedy seems to be gaining traction, with 9.6% support, as per RealClearPolitics.
