April witnessed a decreasing trend in the fundraising for President Joe Biden’s re-election bid, which is potentially concerning for Democrats. Meanwhile, contributions for the campaign of ex-President Donald Trump escalated.
Biden disclosed that the fundraising activities of his campaign, associated associations, in addition to the Democratic National Committee, generated $51 million in April. This denotes a significant downturn from the March collection of $90 million, boosted by a series of events post-State of the Union.
Biden, the current Democratic President, is facing considerable political challenges that may hinder his quest for a second term in the Oval Office. These include below-par polling results and diminishing ardor for his candidacy among his supporters.
“The April fundraising exemplifies solid, steady grassroots fervor,” Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chávez Rodríguez, noted in a statement shared with Politico. “While Trump’s operations exhaust funds persistently and lag behind our expanding and vigorous campaign, they show no notable attempt to engage with the voters they need to convince for victory.”
As reported by Politico, the Biden campaign expended $25 million in April, a slight decline from March’s outflow. Reportedly, the campaign spent less on advertising, but salary costs surged to almost $3 million for a staff strength of 250.
Earlier this month, the Trump campaign communicated to its donors that the entire campaign, inclusive of the Republican National Committee (RNC), had gathered $76 million in April. The campaign proudly proclaimed this figure on Monday night.
“In April, President Trump and the RNC significantly outshone Biden and the Democrats in fundraising, courtesy of the support from millions of modest-dollar donors from every state across the nation,” Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told Politico. “Trump’s dominance in campaign fundraising over Biden is exceptionally noteworthy, keeping in view that he has been detained in a courtroom for nearly nine hours daily over the last four weeks.”
As per the campaign finance records, the Trump campaign expended merely $5.5 million, including over $1.4 million spent on direct mailers. Merely $550,000 was spent on staff salaries, with the Trump staff strength reportedly being just one-fourth of Biden’s team.
Although the mandatory monthly accounts are required from presidential campaigns by the Federal Election Commission, joint fundraising groups — being major sources of campaign funds — don’t need to submit their reports until July.
Following the leadership change at the RNC, the Trump team saw a boost in its fundraising activity but continued major spending to protect the former President amidst his ongoing legal battles.
In April, Trump-aligned Save America PAC reportedly disbursed $3.3 million as legal charges, of which over $850,000 was directed to Blanche Law, one of the law firms representing the ex-President in his New York paperwork lawsuit.
