Dahlonega Welcomes New Dining Options for University of North Georgia Students
Dahlonega, home to the University of North Georgia campus, is famous for its rich mix of fast food joints and local eating establishments. Soon, it’s set to welcome an exciting line-up of new dining options.
Whataburger: A New Favorite on the Block
Whataburger, one of America’s beloved fast food chains, is in the process of setting up a new outlet at the junction of Riley Road and Morrison Moore Parkway. Its location, less than a mile away from the UNG Dahlonega campus, makes it a conveniently accessible dining option for students.
Originally from Texas, Whataburger has made a name for itself with its specially crafted burgers. It is also well-known for its “fancy” and “spicy” versions of ketchup.
Last year, the brand extended its reach to Georgia, opening its first outpost in Kennesaw. Following this expansion, Whataburger set up branches in Cumming and other cities of Georgia. Like its other in-state branches, the Dahlonega Whataburger, if it remains open 24/7 would be among the very few city restaurants that operate round-the-clock.
Announced in 2023, the construction of the Whataburger outlet is currently underway. Although the official opening date remains unconfirmed, the pace of work suggests that it will be ready either by the close of the spring semester or early in the fall semester when the students return to the campus.
Student Views on the New Dining Offering
Austin Hagle, a junior pursuing a major in Criminal Justice and Forensics, thinks the addition of Whataburger to Dahlonega’s dining scene is a smart move as it provides students with an extra food option, available at all times.
“Restaurants remaining open after 9 pm are quite few in the city. With the opening of Whataburger, students can enjoy food at reasonable prices, regardless of the time” – Austin Hagle, junior majoring in Criminal Justice and Forensics.
Another Possible Addition to the Local Dining Scene
Whataburger might not be the only new entrant in Dahlonega’s dining scene. Earlier this year, during the spring semester, Moe’s Southwest Grill, situated at 25 Morrison Moore Pkwy, shut down permanently.
Despite no official announcement, rumors are rife among UNG students about a possible replacement by Chipotle Mexican Grill. There seems to be a basis for this speculation, as both are fast-casual chains, known for their custom-made burritos and bowls, making the switch from Moe’s to Chipotle a smooth one.
Kayla Bumgardner, a senior pursuing a major in Kinesiology, who rarely went to Moe’s in Dahlonega, is looking forward to a potential Chipotle setting up shop in its place.
“I view Chipotle as an upgraded version of a Tex-Mex style fast-casual restaurant, offering superior quality,” remarks Bumgardner.
