New Leadership at Lumpkin County Middle School
The Lumpkin County Board of Education is excited to announce the appointment of Libbie Armstrong, a US Army veteran and Hall County educator since 2024-2025 school year. Armstrong will succeed Nathan Gerrells as the proud new principal of Lumpkin County Middle School (LCMS). As a resident of Lumpkin County since 1997, she has a special bond with the community and looks forward to working with her old colleagues as well as meeting new families.
Lumpkin County Schools Superintendent, Sharon Head, in her official press statement expressed her excitement and confidence in Armstrong’s capability to carry forward the legacy of LCMS. She lauded Armstrong’s unmatched experience, forward-thinking leadership and unwavering devotion to student success that makes her an ideal fit for this position.
A Glimpse into Armstrong’s Life
During an interview with The Nugget, Armstrong shared insights into her early life. Raised in Washington State, Armstrong who would spend summers in Blue Ridge with her father’s family, chose to join the Army after a brief time studying at Washington State University. She made history as the first female to be awarded the U.S. Army Infantry Command (USAIC) Soldier of the Year, while serving as a parachute rigger during her tenure with the Airborne School.
A graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, Armstrong continued her service in the U.S. Army Reserves and the North Carolina and Georgia National Guard while pursuing her studies. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Education, she began her teaching career at Lumpkin County High School (LCHS).
She has fond memories of her time at LCHS from 1997-2012, where she taught AP World History, Economics, and Government and also coached softball, tennis, and volleyball. In addition to coaching, Armstrong guided the Key Club during her tenure at LCHS. Since 2012, she has been serving at Chestatee Academy, a magnet middle school in Hall County offering classes from sixth to eighth grade.
Armstrong’s Leadership Style
Currently, Armstrong holds a Master’s degree in Education from Indiana Wesleyan University and a Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from the University of North Georgia. She firmly believes in the positive influence of her experience in academic testing on her educational approach. She uses her past experience with the College Board as an AP World History exam reader to guide her students towards success.
Armstrong holds the academics, athletics, interests, talents and leadership potentials of the LCMS students in high regard. She praises the Lumpkin County School System’s established academic culture and reaffirms her commitment to open communication and collaboration for the success of all students at LCMS.
On a personal note, Armstrong and her husband, Jeff Armstrong, a native of Dahlonega, recently celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary. They have a tenth-grade son, Rylan Armstrong, who shares his mother’s admiration for the Lumpkin County educators.
