Rock Creek Veterans Group Honors Hall County Veterans with Crosses
Rock Creek Veterans Group recently expressed their appreciation and respect for the Hall County veterans on Memorial Day by putting up crosses across Gainesville.
The Genesis of Rock Creek Veterans
Johnny Hulsey, a significant figure of the Rock Creek Veterans, in his interaction during WDUN’s Drive at 5 mentioned that the group came into existence in 2002 and started with 22 dedicated members. The unfortunate loss of his friends from East Hall High in the Vietnam War inspired him to set up the group. Hulsey worked with Mr. Pete Davenport from Little and Davenport Funeral Home in 2004 to compile the names of the veterans who sacrificed their lives for the nation starting from World War One. The total number of Hall County soldiers killed in the line of duty stands at 168 as per Hulsey.
The Collaborative Effort
Hulsey shared that Rock Creek Veterans collaborated with the Rotary Club of Hall County to erect these markers. Due to their declining strength down to just 10 members, the impetus to team up with a youthful group was imperative. The collaboration was indeed beneficial and came about from observing the American Legion in Dahlonega, Georgia. The American Legion has a tradition of placing markers on Veterans Day and Memorial Day around the square and on the streets of Dahlonega.
The Inception of the Tradition in Gainesville
Diane Cammarata from the Rotary Club of Hall County came up with the idea of bringing this respectful tradition to Gainesville. The process of putting up the markers takes approximately two and a half hours.
Markers at Rock Creek Veteran Park
104 markers have been placed at Rock Creek Veteran Park to symbolize the soldiers from Hall County who died in action. Alongside, a total of 146 have also been installed on Green Street in remembrance of most World War I and World War II veterans. Few names on Green Street are dedicated to veterans who passed away fairly recently, totaling to 258 markers overall.
Upcoming Ceremony by Rock Creek Veterans
Rock Creek Veterans intends to hold a ceremony at Rock Creek Veteran Park on Sunday, May 26, at 2:00 p.m. to pay homage to the fallen soldiers. Hulsey warmly invites everyone to attend the remembrance ceremony.
Markers and More Information
Each marker costs $100 and they are placed to honor the veterans on Veterans Day and Memorial Day. For more information on Rock Creek Veterans, Hulsey can be reached at 706-894-1344.
