Story
Dahlonega welcomes its first Whataburger outlet, with professor Steve Smith placing the landmark first order.
Smith, a Psychological Science professor at the University of North Georgia, was the first customer at the newly opened fast food joint on Morrison Moore Parkway.
For Smith, it was a taste of his childhood.
“As a Texas native, Whataburger has been an integral part of my life,” he said.
In order to ensure he was the first in line on the grand opening day of June 3, he had planned to camp at the restaurant’s parking lot overnight.
However, he did not need to.
Despite arriving with a tent on Sunday night, his understanding colleagues at UNG arranged an unexpected celebration with the management.
Smith confessed that he was somewhat suspicious when he was advised to not show up early that evening.
“My son said ‘Don’t leave yet!’ which made me a bit suspicious,” he disclosed.
AN UNEXPECTED WELCOMING
Smith didn’t have to pitch his tent or sleep in his car, instead, he was invited into the restaurant where companions, coworkers, and fresh Whataburgers were awaiting.
“The managers assured me that there was no need to stay overnight” Smith exclaimed.
He proceeded to place his order and pay for his usual Whataburger with cheese.
So, did the meal meet his high standards?
Smith definitely gave it a nod of approval.
“All I can say is their burgers are superior” he commented.
However, Smith’s order was just the beginning.
Since the official start at 11 a.m. on Monday, the restaurant has been bustling at the corner of Morrison Moore Parkway and Riley Road.
“It’s been a busy first day” affirmed Matt Sanders, adding that it would take roughly a month before complete operations commence.
“We plan to stay open 24/7, but for the initial month, we will only be operating the drive-thru” Sanders outlined.
Smith finds the all-day availability crucial, as he’s already looking toward a midnight Whataburger run.
Smith quipped, “In case I get midnight hunger pangs, I know where to get a snack.”
