West Coast Cities Witness Soaring Homelessness, Increased Crime, and Surging Real Estate Costs

The West Coast, especially in cities across Oregon and Washington, has recently seen a significant increase in homelessness, a rise in crime, and skyrocketing real estate prices. However, it might surprise many that numerous cities in these states still offer a secure and affordable place to live.

Financial Site Identifies Best Places for Affordable Living

Based on a detailed analysis done by GOBankingRates, a list of cost-effective places to live in these states has been curated. The research examined various factors such as livability, average rent, and violence crime rates in different cities.

Washington’s Pullman Leads the Pack

According to the findings, Pullman tops the list, with a population of 31,972. The city, nestled along the Idaho border in the far east of Washington, boasts a very low violent crime rate of just 0.9 per 1,000 residents.

Home to a local airport and an art museum, Pullman is just 8 miles from the University of Idaho. The presence of the University plays a crucial role in bolstering the city’s economy. The picture is a snapshot of a football stadium in Pullman.Getty Images

Notably, the city has an average rent and expenditure of a modest $3,126.

Liberty Lake of Washington Holds Second Position

Liberty Lake, also in Washington, has earned second place in the list by GOBankingRates. Though smaller with a population of only 12,026, it has a slightly higher violent crime rate of 2.2 per 1,000 residents. Its rental and living costs are also a bit steeper, averaging at $3,468.

Oregon’s Central Point Makes the Cut

Lastly, Central Point, Oregon, completes the top three budget-friendly and safe metros. Located near the California border, the lesser-populated city with just 19,123 inhabitants, is nestled amid green hills and is in close proximity to ski resorts and national parks.

The city, dotted with vineyards, ensures a low violent crime rate of 1.4 per 1,000 residents. The average rental and living expenses here stand at $3,818.

Notably, cities in California were part of the study as well, but did not make it to the list of the safest and most affordable places. Pictured is Central Point, Oregon.AP

Why California Cities Failed to Make the Cut

Prominent for its high cost of living, California is infamous as a pricey state. This may have been a contributing reason for its cities failing to make the list of cost-effective and safe places on the West Coast.
