The much-anticipated Met Gala, the star-studded fundraising event known for its fashion pomp and show, has arrived, marking the commencement of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring 2024 exhibition. Held on the first Monday of May, the Met Gala showcases carefully crafted couture outfits that align with the annual theme, worn by notable figures ascending the museum’s iconic stairs.
The gala has a rich history starting from 1948 when tickets cost only $50 compared to today’s hefty price of $30,000. The event typically attracts around 450 guests and raises eight-figure donations for the Costume Institute.
This year, the spring exhibition is titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”. The theme pays tribute to around 250 fragile fashion pieces, some of which can no longer be worn due to their delicate condition.
The Met’s CEO and Director, Max Hollein, noted that “Sleeping Beauties” was designed to evoke the senses, allowing visitors to appreciate the works’ beauty, artistic brilliance, and integrity on a deeper level. Some pieces, dating back decades, will be displayed innovatively using artificial intelligence and CGI. The gala also has a dress code, “Garden of Time,” giving designers creative freedom to interpret the theme in various ways.
Highly-anticipated and exclusive, the Met Gala maintains a close-guarded secrecy about the ongoings behind the museum’s walls. Despite a strict no-phone policy, some images slip out, offering glimpses of the evening’s activities and star-studded lineup.
Every year, four celebrities co-chair the gala, with this year’s lineup including Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, and Bad Bunny serving alongside Anna Wintour, who has chaired the event since 1995. The honorary chairs for the evening are Jonathan Anderson, creative director at Loewe, and Shou Chew, the CEO of TikTok, the event’s sponsor.
Approximately 450 notable guests attend the Met Gala every year, one of whom is Rihanna, who hinted her outfit this year will be “extra chill”; however, rumors are circulating that Taylor Swift will not be walking the red carpet this year.
The Met Gala’s star-studded red carpet event can be followed through Vogue’s livestreaming service starting from 6 p.m. EST on May 6.
