Millennials are seeking out vet services which are tailored to their preferences and are willing to dig deep into their pockets for a more modern, aesthetic environment. They are attracted to those with curated animal art, neutral colors, comfy couches, treat jars, and free cold brew, and they especially value the ability to manage everything via an app.
One millennial, Jonny Ahdout, uses the Modern Animal app, which costs $199 per year for full access. The app allows him to arrange appointments for his dog, communicate with physicians and pay bills. It also provides access to free exams, emergency aid, 24/7 help via chat, on-demand video consultations and the convenience of having all arrangements and records in one place. While the yearly membership does not directly cover pet care, it offers 10% off on all services and products.
Modern Animal, dubbed as the “first human-focused veterinary company”, also has actual sites in California and Texas, which are visually appealing to millennials. It is estimated that 86.9 million households in the US have a pet and millennials constitute 33% of pet owners. Hence, pet start-ups with apps are seeing a surge in demand.
Other notable veterinarian services include Small Door, which provides a yearly membership for $169, inclusive of an annual exam, 20% discount on additional exams and 24/7 telehealth availability. Bond Vet, another popular choice, does not mandate any subscriptions or app use and offers a 24/7 helpline. The round-the-clock telehealth services are particularly attractive to millennial pet owners who are mainly child-free.
