Four categories of food and one type of drink have been flagged by nutrition experts for their potential to contribute to the onset of cancer. Research has demonstrated that diet significantly influences a person’s likelihood of developing various forms of the disease. According to Matthew Lambert, a nutritionist from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), the intake of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, and other nutrient-dense foods can help lower cancer risk.

However, he also provided a list of items to avoid including processed meats, alcohol, red meat, and foods high in sugar or deep-fried. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified processed meats, which have been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other preservation or flavor enhancement means, as carcinogenic in 2015. The World Health Organization also warned that preparation methods for these meats can lead to the formation of cancer-inducing chemicals.

While there is some ambiguity over health risks related to red meat, there is limited evidence showing a correlation with colorectal cancer and possible connections with pancreatic and prostate cancers. Sugary and fried foods, on the other hand, may lead to obesity which has been linked to a higher risk of 13 cancer types.

Furthermore, the consumption of alcohol significantly increases the risk of various cancers. The WCRF advises maintaining a healthy eating habit with a balanced intake of nutrient-rich foods, while minimizing the consumption of alcohol, processed and red meats, and sugary and fried foods.
