At 93 years old, John Starbrook, dubbed as “The Legend”, doesn’t let age define his lifestyle. He is a regular participant in fitness activities as he runs marathons and maintains a six-day workout regimen at the gym.
Joining spin classes aids in keeping him physically active, sharpening not only his lower body but his upper body strength as well. He has been a dedicated swimmer ever since he was a teenager, a skill he further developed while serving in the army medical corps.
To mark his 80th birthday, he swam nearly a mile across the Gulf of Corryvreckan between the Scottish islands of Jura and Scarba. The Legend continues to swim three times a week and even plays water polo.
It was at the age of 53 when Starbrook began his running journey. His personal best stands at 4 hours and 14 minutes for a marathon which he achieved at the start of 2000 in North Wales. At the age of 88 in 2019, he successfully finished a marathon. Setting a record, he became the oldest participant to complete the 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon at age 87.
Despite suggestions from the doctor years ago to quit running, Starbrook defied this advice and carried on running more marathons.
Starbrook, a former egg deliveryman, now lives in Staines, Middlesex and credits his persistent athleticism to his genes. He also maintains a relatively healthy diet, which he associates with his longevity.
Accepting minor health obstacles such as arthritis and irregular heartbeat that he manages with a blood thinner, Starbrook expresses his pleasant surprise at living beyond his originally estimated lifespan of 70 years.
Alongside his personal health achievements, Starbrook contributes to charity as an ambassador for Age UK, inspiring individuals over 50 to remain active and raising substantial donations. With his own experience in staying fit, the retired father of three recommends elderly individuals to take small steps, start by jogging and gradually spending more time at the gym.
Starbrook’s advice comes in line with a recent study that encourages women to start an active lifestyle by age 55 to reap health benefits as they age.
