Certain restaurants in New York City have such high exclusivity that securing a booking could compare to landing a spot on a commercial trip to the Red Planet, a luxury hotel concierge has revealed. In a viral Reddit post, this concierge who opted to stay anonymous shared tips on how to reserve a spot at these restaurants, most notably The Polo Bar and Carbone – upscale eateries where even A-list celebrities like Justin and Hailey Bieber can be turned away if they lack a reservation.
This expert from an unspecified high-end hotel in Midtown, NY stated that these two restaurants are the most sought after, likening them to trigger points for every concierge in the city. According to them, guests demand reservations at these places after seeing them on a ’10 Hardest Restaurant Reservations’ article or on Instagram posts by food bloggers.
The concierge also mentioned other desirable dining spots such as Per Se, Monkey Bar, Le Bernardin, 4 Charles Prime Rib, Don Angie, Torrisi, Blue Box Cafe, COTE, and Balthazar amongst others. However, the key to getting a spot at these culinary heavens is advanced booking, with most of these establishments accepting reservations 28-30 days in advance, with some exceptions.
Tipping, thank you notes, and treats were appreciated by the concierge who lamented that many guests fail to follow these suggestions, treating them as though they had a press rep level of access to the restaurants. The concierge warned that patrons would struggle to get a last-minute reservation at these top spots unless they held the same clout as a celebrity stylist.
The concierge recounted a story of a guest from Miami who behaved self-importantly, asking for last-minute reservations by falsely claiming he was a regular at the restaurant. However, when the concierge contacted the restaurant, it transpired that the restaurant knew the guest, but because of his unpleasant and intoxicated behaviour rather than his frequency of visits.
