Apple has released a critical new software update for its devices, providing enhanced security and a range of new features for users. The update, iOS 17.5, was unveiled on Monday and includes improvements for various services, including Apple News, Podcasts, and notifications.
A significant addition for iPhone XS and later models is the “Repair State” mode, suitable for those who have the “Stolen Device Protection” enabled. This mode enforces a one-hour delay before modifying key account or phone settings, such as disabling “Find My”. However, when in “Repair State” mode, users can turn off “Find My” immediately during Genius Bar services after their ownership has been verified.
The update also introduces new features for Apple News Plus subscribers, including access to a new game, Quartiles, leaderboard sharing of game scores, and offline reading through downloadable stories, puzzles, and audio articles. iOS 17.5 also brings changes to the Podcast widget, which now changes color based on the currently playing podcast’s cover art, and recently played podcasts will appear in Spotlight Search suggestions.
To counter dangerous tracking incidents, iOS 17.5 includes a “Cross-Platform Tracking Detection” feature that can identify and alert users about unfamiliar and unwanted third-party tracing devices. The update also rectifies various security vulnerabilities.
Apple also confirmed that it doesn’t disclose or discuss security issues until an investigation has transpired and patches have been released. This particular update addresses 15 security vulnerabilities.
This update, which includes stunning new “Pride” wallpapers, is the precursor to the highly anticipated iOS 18. The forthcoming software, rumored to feature artificial intelligence technologies, will only function on newer iPhone models. Unfortunately, models older than the iPhone 8 Plus and some iPhone SE models won’t be compatible with iOS 18 and future updates.
