TJ Maxx and Marshalls to Equip Employees with Body Cameras to Curb Theft

In an effort to mitigate the increasing incidents of theft that many US retailers currently face, TJ Maxx and Marshalls have decided to provide their employees with body cameras.

TJX Companies, the parent company of these retailers that also owns Sierra and Home Estate, started trial runs of the body cameras at select stores this year. A company spokesperson told FOX Business that these cameras are being deployed to reduce incidents, deter crime, and exhibit to their associates and clients that store safety is a priority.

Body Cameras for Loss Prevention Officers

The loss prevention officers in these retail outlets will be wearing these cameras after receiving the necessary training on operating these devices. Video recordings will strictly be shared with law enforcement, upon their request or following a subpoena, as per the company’s guidelines.

The company has expressed hope that if customers are aware they are being filmed, it would prevent them from shoplifting. This was stated by Chief Financial Officer John Klinger during an earnings call in May.

Shrink Management is a Priority

The company’s focus lies in tackling “shrink” – a term used in the retail industry for merchandise that is lost or stolen, as reported by Fox Business.

Impact of Body Cameras on Shrink Management

While the company anticipates shrink to remain constant year-over-year, it is Klinger’s top priority to maintain a balance between safeguarding goods and ensuring customer satisfaction and ease of shopping while ensuring store safety.

TJX Companies expects that the introduction of these cameras will curb the rampant retail theft issues that businesses across the country are grappling with. In 2022, theft led to losses amounting to $112.1 billion, as per the National Retail Federation.

Other Retailers’ Ant-theft Strategies

Several other retailers like Target and Dollar General have this year revealed plans to cut down or completely eliminate self-checkout at their stores to keep check on thefts.
