Student journalists at Columbia University’s protest encampment in Manhattan provided real-time updates as police officers in riot gear cleared an occupied university building. The student-run radio station, WKCR, experienced a surge in popularity that caused its website to crash. Across the country, student journalists have been praised for their detailed coverage of campus protests, with publications like The Brown Daily Herald, The Daily Trojan, The Dartmouth, and The Daily Tar Heel providing minute-by-minute updates on various platforms.

Despite some inaccuracies, such as WKCR incorrectly reporting the use of tear gas by the NYPD, student journalists have been commended for their efforts. The emotional toll of reporting on protests was highlighted by Emmy Martin, editor in chief of The Daily Tar Heel, who mentioned that many journalists are still processing the events that unfolded on their campus.

After intense coverage on Tuesday night, WKCR’s student journalists took a break for physical and emotional recuperation. Some even slept in the studio to ensure round-the-clock coverage. For these student journalists, schoolwork took a backseat to their reporting responsibilities during the protests.
