ABC News President Kim Godwin has decided to retire amid scrutiny from superiors regarding her job performance and after having much of her power significantly reduced, according to The Post. Previously the first black woman to lead a national broadcast news operation, Godwin’s struggled during her turbulent tenure after a February restructuring by ABC’s parent company, Disney.
In a staff memo, Godwin announced her retirement from broadcast journalism, describing it as a difficult decision to walk away from an industry she loves greatly. She cited her future and family as primary reasons for her decision. Despite facing challenges in her position, Godwin praised ABC News for achieving the top spot in ratings and urged staff to find joy in journalism.
She had started her career four decades ago and climbed to her professional peak some three years ago when selected to lead ABC News. But Disney’s restructuring move effectively demoted her. She still insisted she was in charge, sources said, but a review of her leadership was conducted last week.
While it’s been reported that ABC’s money-making divisions were poorly managed under Godwin, she remains positive when acknowledging the achievements of ABC News. Debra OConnell, promoted to a leadership role overseeing ABC News, will temporarily take over the helm. OConnell expressed her commitment to provide the team the necessary support to continue their successful path forward and vowed to uphold the proud tradition of ABC News.
