X Formalizes Policy on Adult Content
San Francisco-based social media platform X has formally confirmed that its users can share adult content that is consensual in nature and designated as such. This formalization of rules applies to a policy that already existed when the platform was still known as Twitter, before being purchased by tech magnate Elon Musk in 2022.
X’s Stance on Adult Content
As outlined in a recent update on its website, X believes that users have the right to create, disseminate, and consume adult-oriented material, as long as it is produced and shared consensually. The company supports the view that sexual expression, be it visual or written, can contribute to legitimate forms of artistic expression.
Adult content was similarly permissible on Twitter, prior to its rebranding as X, although no official policy existed. X, however, specifies that it will limit the accessibility of adult content for children and for adult users who opt not to view it.
X’s Terms of Content Promotion and Distribution
X clearly delineates its prohibitions, stating that it does not tolerate any content that promotes exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization, or harm towards minors or obscene activities. The platform also restricts the sharing of adult content in “highly visible” areas such as user profile images or banners.
Comparisons to Other Social Media Platforms
This policy considerably sets X apart from other social media entities. Platforms owned by Meta, such as Instagram and Facebook, as well as TikTok and Google’s YouTube, all take a different stance on adult content.
Analysis of X’s Adult Content Policy
Associate Professor of Communication at Cornell University, Brooke Erin Duffy, says that X’s decision to permit adult content aligns well with the firm’s marketing strategy post-Musk’s acquisition. According to Duffy, X unabashedly seeks to provoke and differentiate itself from its ‘brand safe’ competitors.
She suggests that the company seems to be appealing to individuals, including artists and content creators, who have felt marginalized by the nudity or sexual expression restrictions enforced by other social media platforms.
X’s Guidelines on Real and AI-Generated Content
X’s adult content policy is not limited to real material but extends to artificial-intelligence-generated content. Regular posters of adult content are requested by X to adjust their media settings to provide a warning for all their image and video posts. This precaution ensures that users confirm their desire to view such content before it is displayed.
