McDonald’s, with its ubiquitous presence worldwide, had approximately 41,800 global locations as of 2023, representing an increase from 40,200 in 2022, as per data from Statista via Chowhound. The U.S boasts the highest number of McDonald’s, thanks to being home to the first restaurant opened in San Bernardino, California in 1940.
The fast-food giant declared intention to inaugurate 9,000 new global outlets by 2027 and anticipates a 4% new restaurant growth in 2024, rising to 5% in subsequent years. By the close of 2024, it plans to inaugurate 2,100 additional venues, 500 of which will be in the U.S.
However, some countries, including Bermuda, Bolivia, Iceland, Iran, Macedonia, North Korea, Yemen, and Zimbabwe, prohibit McDonald’s due to public health and cultural preservation reasons. Back in the U.S., Houston, Texas, takes the lead with the highest number of McDonald’s at 126.
Several unique McDonald’s also exist, such as a historic landmark in Nassau, Long Island, and the “poshest” one located in a Victorian mansion in Freeport, Maine.
In Europe, France and the UK led with the highest number of McDonald’s, around 1,600 and 1,400 respectively. As for the Asia Pacific and the Middle East, China, Japan and Australia have a significant number of stores. However, 123 countries, including North Korea, Russia, Iran, Bermuda, and Iceland, have no McDonald’s outlets.
