Both liberal and conservative media in the U.S showed a rare unity this week, agreeing that Michael D. Cohen, the government’s key witness in its case against ex-president Donald J. Trump, deserved to be disparaged.
The conservative media portrayed Cohen, Trump’s erstwhile attorney, as a betrayal to the conservative agenda. Meanwhile, liberal media focused on Cohen’s obsessive desire to impress Trump. Despite sharing similar sentiments, they demonstrated dissimilar coverage styles. Liberal media provided extensive coverage of Cohen’s trial proceedings—the first criminal trial against an ex-president, while numerous conservative outlets downplayed his courtroom statements.
MSNBC, for instance, gave ample coverage of Cohen’s testimony, despite acknowledging his flawed credibility due to his previous prison sentence for lying to Congress. Other outlets such as the popular liberal podcast ‘Pod Save America,’ described Cohen as a dishonest and sleazy person. However, much of these criticisms did not detract from the damaging potential of Cohen’s testimonials against Trump.
On the conservative side, Fox News countered with statements arguing Cohen’s lack of credibility, with host Greg Gutfeld referring to his testimony as ‘all holes and no cheese.’ Other conservative news outlets like Newsmax echoed similar sentiments. The New York Post, however, chose to ignore Cohen’s trial altogether, focusing instead on a false statement made by President Biden’s former press secretary, Jen Psaki, in her new book.
