Alexis Ohanian, Serena Williams’ Husband, Tests Positive for Lyme Disease

Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit and husband to tennis champion Serena Williams, has been diagnosed with Lyme disease. The 41-year-old father of two made the revelation after receiving the results of a comprehensive body scan.

Discovering the Unexpected Diagnosis

“I underwent a series of health scans and found out I have Lyme disease,” Alexis Ohanian shared during X Tuesday. Much to his relief, he has so far not exhibited any symptoms of the disease. He also referred to his cholesterol count, pointing out that while his bad cholesterol level is manageable, his good cholesterol is inadequate. He also revealed his testosterone levels, noting that they were normal.

Understanding Lime Disease

Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia bacteria, reports The Mayo Clinic. The disease is usually contracted through the bite of a tick that carries this bacteria. Early stage symptoms of Lyme disease often include headaches, flu-like symptoms, joint pain, fatigue, and sometimes a visible rash, as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control.

Ohanian expressed astonishment at the diagnosis, considering his limited exposure to the wilderness and the Northeast region, known for its ticks.

Responding to the Diagnosis

“A close acquaintance had experienced this disease a few years ago, showing many symptoms and the cause took a while to identify. Fortunately, they were able to treat it successfully,” he acknowledged.

However, Ohanian remains undeterred and optimistic, noting that he will start on antibiotics treatment and refuses to be held back by the diagnosis.

Seek Professional Medical Advice

Addressing his half a million followers on the platform, Ohanian urged them to get professional help if they suspect having Lyme disease. “Please consult a doctor. Don’t rely on me or anyone else for medical advice,” he cautioned.

Recognizing the prevalence of the disease, he shared that more than 470,000 Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease annually, as per the CDC.

The CDC also notes that most Lyme disease cases can be managed with a 10-14 day course of antibiotics.

Ohanian Joins Others in Lyme Disease Battle

Ohanian is now part of a growing list of celebrities who have publicly shared their Lyme disease experiences, including Justin Bieber, Bella Hadid and Yolanda Hadid, Shania Twain, Avril Lavigne, and Amy Schumer.

This news follows the recent appearance of Ohanian with Serena Williams and their daughter, Olympia at the 2024 ESPY Awards. At the star-studded event, Williams took to the stage as the host, presenting a variety of awards, featuring the Pat Tillman Award for Service presented to Prince Harry, who happens to be the husband of her close friend Meghan Markle.
